The northern lights Painting

The picture is inspired by my trip to Iceland. I was lucky to see the northern lights. It was the main dream of my childhood. The impression was so strong that when I returned home, I dedicated to draw it. I wanted to convey the light, the variety of colors and some special delight that you feel at the moment when you see this incredible phenomenon. Icelanders are lucky: they can see the northern lights 8 months a year, from early September to late April. There are only a few places in the world where you can see this amazing phenomenon. Aurora borealis becomes visible when solar particles enter the Earth’s magnetic field in the upper atmosphere and ionize. The intensity of the northern lights depends on solar activity and the speed of the particles themselves. It looks like flashes of light dancing in the sky. Usually green, but other colors are also found: purple, red, pink, orange and blue. Color depends on the chemical element whose particles are ionized. While science could not explain where the northern lights came from, different answers to this question arose in different cultures. Ancient Scandinavians, for example, assumed that it was the glitter of the Valkyrie armor, the goddesses who determined who would win the battle and who would die, and who would take warriors into the afterlife.
