About The Artwork

This painting is one of an ongoing theme, primarily exploring thought and mood, evoking atmosphere rather than simply a reference to landscape or place. These Dark Woods edges the idea beyond any perceived tranquility of the scene, light is darkened perhaps, and the landscape shifts into something not fully defined but open to interpretation, leading the viewer to consider what such a landscape may also harbour and what may lie beyond... Figures are included as an inherent part of the theme, until now painted separately, alone in their own dark space, distracted by dark thoughts or perhaps yearning to be elsewhere. To be seen concurrently with the paintings of woods as well as considered separately.

“I am drawn to creating images which have simplicity, to achieve a sense of reality but not a direct translation, to include a shift, something present which is not fully explained or known. Recent paintings explore themes which demanded the work be monochromatic.” • BACKGROUND I had a first solo exhibition of paintings at Gallery One, Vyner Street, London in 2012. Throughout the exhibition, the work’s emotional resonance was often mentioned. Through the recommendation of Fru Tholstrup, then Director, Haunch of Venison, London, and now Director, Sotheby’s S|2 gallery, who thought my exhibition beautiful and my work stunning, one work, These Dark Woods | Base was acquired for the permanent collection of Babington House, part of Soho House (curators Francesca Gavin & Jonathan Yeo). Among the various paintings sold to date Annie Lennox purchased four of the Who She Is series, and Michele Clapton, costume designer for Game of Thrones bought a key painting from this same series and another work more recently. I exhibited at The Other Art Fair in November 2012 and April 2013, initially included in a small number of preliminary artists chosen, the selection committee said “the charisma and individuality of your work made you stand out from a very strong field of applicants”. Since then my work has been exhibited by galleries at art fairs including The London Art Fair and Affordable Art Fair and also included in gallery shows by both bo.lee gallery and Compass Gallery. A solo exhibition was held from June – August 2015 at Lane House Arts, Bath. In 2015 Francesca Gavin invited me to present work for possible inclusion in the new collection for Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire. Two paintings were selected. • PREVIOUSLY For a decade I worked in collaboration with close friend Annie Lennox. Our exploring photography together evolved into a series of portraits with Annie as the subject. Images were used for her album ‘Bare’, press and publicity worldwide and an exhibition in New York, which I curated. Our collaboration evolved with my becoming her visual director and designer, working on further albums, websites, videos and latterly collating and recording her considerable archive. Our portraits were included in exhibitions at the V&A, Lowry Centre, and Aberdeen Art Gallery.
