About The Artwork

The painting portrays Ariadne as a celestial being who transcends the earthly realm. She reclines on a bed of clouds, surrounded by the majestic mountains that evoke the ancient land of Crete. She holds a red thread in her hand, which is the key to her story and her fate. The thread is the gift she gave to Theseus, the Athenian hero who came to slay the Minotaur, the monstrous offspring of her mother Pasiphae and a bull. The thread enabled Theseus to find his way in and out of the Labyrinth, a complex maze that housed the beast. With Ariadne’s help, Theseus succeeded in his quest and escaped with her. However, Theseus soon betrayed Ariadne and abandoned her on the island of Naxos, where she was left alone and heartbroken. But her sorrow was not to last, for she caught the eye of Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy, who fell in love with her and made her his bride. Dionysus also honored her by transforming her thread into a constellation of stars, the Corona Borealis, which means the Northern Crown. Thus, Ariadne became immortalized in the sky, as a symbol of love, loyalty, and wisdom. The painting reflects this transformation by depicting Ariadne under a starry night sky, which illuminates her face and body with a soft glow. She looks at the viewer with serene and dreamy expression. The stars signify her divine status and her connection to Dionysus. The red thread in her hand is a reminder of her past, but also a link to her future, as it represents the bond between her and her godly husband. The painting invites the viewer to admire Ariadne’s beauty and grace, and to marvel at her journey from a mortal princess to a goddess of the heavens.
