Three Birds Painting

I painted this piece on the back of a 48 square inch piece of plexiglass. Light blue and grey tones of acrylic paint were applied energetically to the back of the plexiglass with my hands and fingers. The silhouette of birds was carved out of the paint before it had dried. When mounted in the framed lightbox, you can see the light penetrating and diffusing through the acrylic paint and shining through the negative space of the bird's silhouette. I've always enjoyed watching birds and this piece is a representation of the freedom they enjoy while gliding in the sky. Alongside the subject matter, the viewer can experience visually the freedom I enjoyed as an artist, applying the paint on the glass. When the light shines through the piece the viewer can see the marks and application of paint in a way not seen on paintings that aren't lit from behind. The sweeping movements and expressive application of paint symbolize my desire as an artist to freely express myself at the moment as well as create unique mark-making that infuses my presence into the piece itself. Inspired by the freedom of birds, the act of painting in this piece is random and full of energy and movement.
