About The Artwork

'Three' is an original oil painting from HE Wiseman's collection entitled 'The Parergon'. This title finds its roots in the deconstructive theory of Jacques Derrida and his text exploring the notion of beauty within Kant's theories. Etymologically it means the outer-work and it is something which: “Comes against, beside, and in addition to the ergon, the work done [fait], the fact [le fait], the work, but it does not fall to one side, it touches and cooperates within the operation, from a certain outside. Neither simply outside nor simply inside. Like an accessory that one is obliged to welcome on the border, on board [au bord, à bord].” 1 Wiseman travelled to Grenoble in order to study; the focus of the move was to deepen her understanding of the theories, semantics and working methods within art practice. However, always looming on the peripheries was the dramatic landscape of the Alps, and it is these imposing figures of geological architecture that dominate this collection. The city and the mountains framed Wiseman’s experience, quietly shaping that year, a time which was to prove pivotal in both her artistic and philosophical development. Since returning to the UK this quiet influence has amplified; that which used to be the frame has become the painting. The Alpine backdrop has come to dictate Wiseman’s thinking, a phantom presence within the scenery of her mind. The vivid colouring of this collection reflects this turbulent and dramatic movement; the scenes seem heightened as their presence grows stronger within the artist’s imagination. The parergon’s significance seems to be constantly intensifying and the need to capture this sensation can be seen within each painting. As the lines between the internal and the external begin to blur, certain questions begin to surface – if the peripheral is now the main focus, what has been placed on the edge? All of the paintings in the collection come framed in Oak and signed by the artist. 1 Jacques Derrida, The Parergon p.54

HE Wiseman Lives and works in London HE Wiseman is a visual artist whose work is informed by the principles of Deconstructive theory and the writings of Hélène Cixous and Jacques Derrida. Fluid in form, Wiseman’s pieces shift between text, installation, painting and performance. An underlying need to question, complicate and expose the structures of traditional logic inherent in the frameworks of language, theory and society form the foundations of her practice. HE Wiseman has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, in both solo and group shows. Wiseman’s work has been shortlisted for the Vantage Art Prize (2013) and the Litchfield Prize (2014) as well as appearing in the Evening Standard and the Yorkshire Post. Her written works on the philosophy and theory of art have appeared in publications such as Penumbra, The Debut Series and the £383,911.73 Exhibition Catalogue. Wiseman is a founding member of the VERB curatorial collective who create innovative art exhibitions, publications and events which champion the work of emerging artists.
