About The Artwork

The title of my painting Through a Glass Darkly refers to a biblical quote and has nothing to do with the Ingmar Bergman film. 'When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.' For me, my painting is also based on the psychology of intersubjectivity - relating to theories of co-created meaning within therapy - the recognition of a shared humanity between two or more people. In the painting, the strange, distressed humonoid figure within the 'portal' of the canvas relates to ideas of how a part of a person's consciousness can becomes fractured and trapped within a loop of time - after enduring and surviving whatever stressful environment we were placed into while growing up. Therefore as adults, we live with a 'child-self' within our minds, which we can learn how to nurture through practicing compassion; effectively becoming our own best parent. From Dr. Oliver Tearle: 'If someone is behind us as we gaze into a mirror, and we are attempting to see them, a cloudy or obscure mirror is going to hinder our vision. But when we are able to turn and face them, we have no need of the mirror, obscure or otherwise.'

Ben Johnson is an oil painter working from a studio based in Leeds West Yorkshire UK. After receiving a first at university for a dissertation on the philosophy of existentialism in relation to Alberto Giacometti - I rented a studio, teaching myself how to paint over 15 years; while working in adult mental health for the NHS. Co-curated an exhibition at Dean Clough gallery in Halifax - just before the pandemic. I also work as a counsellor and in a survivor led crisis house. I train as a psychotherapist on a post-grad. Happy to arrange studio visits and open to commissions. Work from life and photos. Portraits and metaphysical dream-like imagery. Had a solo exhibition in August 2023 which received great feedback from the public. Working towards another exhibition for this year.
