About The Artwork

"Through My Eyes" is the second in a series I am working on called 'Painted Faces'. I am investigating how changing the surface of our faces by painting the skin changes both how we are seen and how we present ourselves to the world. This portrait talks about the painted face as protection, as a barrier through which this young person sees the world. In a world where ethnic borders prevail, the face painting speaks volumes about identity, social status, availability and so on. This identity describes how we see the person behind the paint, whether we understand the marks or not. But what and who do they see when looking back at us? Our faces are unmarked, at the most our eyes may be covered by sunglasses. How do they read us? With distrust? Uncertainty? Fear? I tried to capture that sense in this portrait. A sense of being looked at in an unequal way. I think that this look is one we've seen in many people's eyes who are from a culture other than our own. It doesn't have to be that way. I'd like this portrait to be a a reminder that we can reach out and touch the stranger however different they may appear to be; that underneath the surface we are same, we are all just needy human beings.

Michael Chomse studied Fine Art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, South Africa, in the late seventies. It was a tumultuous time. He moved from there directly into a career as a documentary filmmaker, seeking the wider audiences that film offered his growing social conscience. Through thirty years of filmmaking, he has honed his visual and storytelling skills to the point where direct contact with paint and canvas is a necessity for his future development. He continues telling stories that have impacted him through the medium of paint on canvas . He is currently working closely with select artists in Europe, Canada and the USA, developing work that reflects a global perspective in the search for a new visual language.
