This piece depicts two Japanese girls in Shirakawa-Go, a remote mountain village that is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Gassho-zukuri means “constructed like hands in prayer”, as the farmhouses’ steep thatched roofs, which are constructed completely without nails, resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. The main pillars that hold up the home are placed on big boulders. Craftsmen will hand chisel the bottom of each pillar so perfectly fits onto its boulder. Because of the way these houses are constructed they can be completely taken apart and moved to a new location. When the roof of one of the houses in the village needs to be replaced all the villagers will come together to re-thatch it, this is called “Yui”. “Yui” stands for supporting each other in Japanese, it describes the bond between the villagers. I was very inspired by my visit to this little town. This mixed media painting on wood is created using a combination of image transfer and acrylic paints and mediums. The artwork comes with a wire on the back for hanging, it is signed on the front and has title, date, artist name and a signed certificate of authenticity from the artist on the back. Be advised that colors and brightness depend on your monitor and the digital picture may be slightly different from the original work of art. The artist retains all reproduction and copyrights.

Leaving the Netherlands was a breeze. Japan didn’t scare me, America didn’t intimidate and Canada is as easy-going as it gets. The thing that frightens me, is creating Art. For the longest time, I believed I was the master of my craft. I strode into my studio with confidence to create bodies of work like Traveling the World and World on Washi.
