Time Acrylic paint, oil paint, ink, organic bees wax, organic shea butter, organic cocoa butter, sunflower oil and sand on canvas. 2017 “Tide” - a regular rise and fall in the level of the sea, caused by the pull of the moon and sun; the flow of water that happens as the sea rises and falls. These works belong to a series which the artist has entitled “Tide”. “Tide” sees Deans incorporate the use of inks, oils, sand, clay, wax, shea and cocoa butter as a supplement to his conventional use of paint. The “Tide” series focuses on the idea of time and life’s cycles. Whilst maintaining the vehement use of colour, the works in the “Tide” series sees Deans approach his subject matter in a more abstract way than other works. Concerned with ideas about time, the series incorporate techniques such as scribing and scrapping into the paint; “capturing stories or the energy of the moment when the painting was created”. Sand which the artist collected from Margate Beach is used throughout the series, linking the works back to the recurring ideas of regionalism, place and time.

I am a London-born artist. The often regional themes in my works have in common the a fascination with the relationship between people, places and cultures. Heavily influenced by his life in South London, the paintings can be recognised by my vehement painterly technique and unusual pallet; natural materials mixed with thick textured paints, sand, oils and butters, overworked with charcoal, chalk, oil-bar and other mediums. With its emphasis on layer rich canvasses which provide a setting for paint and natural elements to come together, my paintings can be seen as a kind of urban abstract expressionism, deeply rooted in his responses towards growing up in a Jamaican family in London.
