Eris was the goddess of dispute and the daughter of the Night. According to legend, she had gone mad after not being invited to the wedding of Thetis and Peleus. So to get back at them she engraved a golden apple with the words, ”to the most beautiful,” and threw it down on the floor in the room with the goddesses. Naturally, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite all put claim to the apple. A big fight ensued, but Paris intervened and offered the apple to Aphrodite. He wanted her to be on his side when he would ask beautiful Helen to be his wife. However, as Helen was from Troia this was cause for war, being disrespected like that. Legend states this became the reason for the big war between ancient Greeks and the Trojan people. Beauty may be essential to make our lives more pleasant but if it is the cause of stress and dispute, then catastrophe will be the result.
