About The Artwork

I have been painting salt marshes on the coast of Essex and Kent for a couple of years now, and particularly like the area around Tollesbury in Essex. It’s a fairly undiscovered part of the country with wonderful light & unique scenery and I'm also drawn to the juxtaposition of the industrial buildings that are often scattered across the horizon... This painting is the largest from my Tollesbury series to date, and incorporates a combination of many of the techniques that I've used in other paintings of this area. It's one of those paintings which you really have to look at closely to see all the detail, as it's made up of hundreds of fragments of my hand painted papers collaged onto a large canvas. The pieces of collage are little artworks in themselves and are full of detail and history. You can see several 'close-up' details of the painting here. The finished work was then glazed with a matte varnish to enhance the colours and textures of the collage, and also to bond and protect it. Another painting of this view across the estuary was exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London 2022, and I've sold a further 3 paintings from the Tollesbury series. The canvas is ready to hang with the colours of the painting continuing around the sides.

My paintings have been selected for & exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour Mall Galleries, The Royal Watercolour Society, Bankside Gallery and the National Open Art group shows in London. Experimental painting techniques have always played a large part in my work since studying constructed textiles at the Royal College of Art. I now channel my interest in creating unusual effects onto paper and canvas rather than fabric. Textiles, texture and pattern continue to influence my paintings which include a series of mixed media ‘portraits’ of vintage dresses on paper and canvas. My paintings are often built up using a variety of processes including layers of textured gesso, watercolours, inks, acrylics or oils and are then sanded and re-worked to develop a unique and enigmatic identity. I also create digital art prints which I sometimes incorporate into my paintings and run small informal workshops in experimental painting techniques from my studio in a converted Victorian school in London SE22. My work has been sold to a wide range of collectors in the UK, Europe, USA, and Australia including Dulwich Picture Gallery as a gift for one of their trustees, a Silicone Valley billionaire, a Hollywood film producer, a magician, a forensic tax investigator and a stand-up comedienne amongst many others.
