Tout Le Monde Painting

Based on characters from 1970's Tatler Magazines discovered at the family home and featuring the occasional shot of Oldfield's parents, 'Tout Le Monde' is a satirical look at the upper class world they came from. Having always admired the immersive atmosphere of 'The Peasant Wedding' by Pieter Brueghel, Oldfield has tried to take this effect further with the use of two vanishing points, which place the viewer at a specific point in relation to the scene. Michael Andrews triptych, 'All Night Long' was also an influence, with its exaggerated figures epitomizing a certain social milieu. 'They f*ck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do... ...But they were f*cked up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another's throats' With Philip Larkin's infamous poem 'This be the verse' in mind, the title 'This Be the Painting' was toyed with. At the heart of 'Tout Le Monde' is the tension between parent-child-adult relationships.
