About The Artwork

Oil on Belgian linen, unframed, ready to hang. Signed on the front. This painting is an ode to rebirth and reinvention. It is the story of every one of us who chooses to start again. One perfect bloom noses its way up towards the light from the murky, tangled undergrowth of roots and stems in dark waters. Leaving behind its shadowy, mysterious origins, it glows, lamp-like, triumphant. The idea for this work came during a visit to a Buddhist temple in Sydney. My aim was to present the glory of a single lotus flower, glowing as a light, amid a plethora of leaves and undergrowth. To achieve this, I took my inspiration from the chiaroscuro techniques of Renaissance art.

I am ethnically a Pakistani artist, living and working in Sydney. I am self-taught and enjoy painting landscapes and still life in oils. I allow my art practice to evolve in different directions as I discover new materials and ideas. In the past couple of years, I have been enjoying my discovery of beeswax as a painting medium and a lot of my recent work incorporates the heavy texture and subtle shifts of colour that working with wax allows. I am inspired by how light transforms objects and people. Light and shadow are two important characters that populate my work. My paintings develop slowly, in layers of varying thickness and opacity. Each stage of work is instinctive, leading to, and determining, the next. In a meditative conversation between my work and myself, the end often arrives as a revelation. I have travelled and lived for many years in Europe, the Middle East and Pakistan, so the influences in my work are varied and diverse.
