ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is a hybrid painting/collage made up of fabric glued to a cradled wood substrate with the addition of gesso and acrylic paint. The matrix of fabric and paint in overlapping horizontal and vertical marks divides and animates the space into a form that recalls a tree. The natural waviness of the glued fabric as contrasted with the straight lines of the cut shapes creates a unique gestalt.

Born in New Jersey in 1950, Will studied at The Art Student’s League of NYC and Cornell University. He has been making geometric abstraction in paint, pastel, wax, collage, assemblage, and fabric since 1974. His work combines rigorous modernist structures with post-modern devices such as appropriation, chance, and seriality. Recent work employs patterned fabrics in the larger pieces and bits of art magazine text, paint chips and reproductions in the collages. Will's recent art is a return to pure formalism, with color relationships predominant.
