About The Artwork
This little green creature is a waxy monkey tree frog indigenous to Central and South America. I found this one in the reptiles and amphibians house at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. It gets its monkey name for the way it crawls among tree branches rather than hopping. It also secrets a waxy substance through its skin that gives it a smooth, shiny, "waxy" appearance. I chose to render this in oil pastels because of their vivid color and the way they can be built up and layered. Oil pastel works are called paintings, but to me, they are an appealing combination of painting, drawing, and illustration. This one was done on a warm colored brown paper that gives it an earthy, natural feel.
