The ‘Twins of Colney Hatch’ series continues with this third instalment, which is the largest, and has been my favourite one to execute. In this series of studies and paintings I explore the feelings that a home can trigger when you are looking at / into it. As an observer, you may feel curious, tempted to go nearer, attracted to the warm glow of the light and the prospect of a cosy rest, or indeed uneasy, nervous or a whole spectrum of other emotions. You might also infer from these houses what may surround them - extending the landscape with your own imagination. What you see will depend on the time of day, your state of mind, your experience, the light that is or isn't coming from the place, the way it appears to be maintained or neglected. We project what we know and what we want onto apparently mute places, and in this way they tell us about ourselves as well as about those who may inhabit them. This particular painting was a joy to make because of its scale, the colour encounters that I made as I went, and a general sense of gestural freedom. It is grounded into a bright ultramarine which you can see popping through in places.

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
