Ships in a Tube
Inspired by the famous dialogues between two ancient Chinese philosophers Zhuangzi and Huizi during the Warring States period regarding the subjectivity of happiness, this painting captures the motion and rippling effect when two fishes swim across each other. The dialogue between them shares a lot of resemblance to the discussion regarding action painting in the 50s. Zhuangzi saw the minnows coming out and darting around where they please, and stated that this is what fishes enjoy, while Huizi challenged "You're not a fish - how do you know what fish enjoy?" I am a believer that a finished painting is only a physical manifestation of the actual work of art. And I do enjoy showing the splashes from "darting around" like the minnows.
