Using a wide variety of techniques in color application, manipulation and color luminosity—along with significant experimentation in scale—my work explores the idea of creating paintings that either strongly influence or directly form and shape a space, a room, an environment. The emphasis I put on color luminosity aid in questioning how the figure and ground relate to one another. With the use of Tyvek—an industrial siding material used in construction—I am able to create large areas where oversized marks compete with the vibrancy of the solid ground. In the end, the ground becomes more dominant and the importance of the figure is questioned, allowing for the viewer to enjoy a total recalibration of analysis and interpretation. It should be noted, too, that the use of Tyvek and an industrial squeegee for application, links “natural” marks and painting with preconceived notions of industry and nature—opening wider the door to greater appreciation and understanding.
