About The Artwork

About this artwork: While perusing Courbet, I came across one of his paintings of a lonely wave crashing on a shoreline. It, like other similar lapping iterations, was titled La Vague, or The Wave. I was intrigued to discover that, in French, wave & vague are synonymous with “imprécision”. To be vague, in my mind (until now) was an act of passivity, or even laziness. It generally implied evasiveness due to a lack of confidence. En 13th c. français, however, vague meant something more like “wild, hostile, wandering”, a chaos summoned by and for the out-caste. Vagueness is not a coy response prancing about, slithering atop a safely predictable tide. No, to be vague means to be a rogue, a wave looking to devour those who neglect their periphery. A Vague is a tiger, hunting down the hapless and vain. It’s with this connotation in mind that, as a painter, I handle “vague” strokes in a new, cautionary (or emboldened?) manner.
