About The Artwork

About this artwork: As I’ve been painting the Vague Actualization series, Gustave Courbet has been an inspiration. In the 1860s, leading up to the Paris Commune, he enjoyed an actualized art career, thanks to his social realism. These works cast a harsh light on the world that the comfortable had a dominant hand in making. Strange and telling that The Stone Breakers, an honest image portraying sweaty, manual labor would be an object of controversy. The arc of the story eventually has Courbet months-imprisoned for anarchy and aristo-clasm. Owing those in power a crushing debt, he fled by night to Switzerland where he continued until his death to paint uncontroversial (but stormy) seascapes. As I paint through this series, I’m thinking about decades-old decisions that have made my shoreline. Thinking about where I’d rather be right now. Thinking about fragile paper boats. Thinking about regret & resolve. Pain & potential. Hope & honesty.
