Vanitas I - The Death of Superman,
oil on panel, 11 x 14 inches © Jim Serrett

This piece is framed in a Black Satin Wood Frame
It is painted on a 11 x 14 inches (30 x 36 cm) professional/archival canvas panel. The wood frame dimensions are 17 x 20 inches (43 x 51 cm)

As the late great comedian Gene Wider said, "Time is a precious thing. Never waste it." That is the meaning or narrative I get from those Vanitas and memento mori pieces. Yes, remember that you are mortal humans, that yes each of us will die in time. We are not ten feet tall and bulletproof, little reminders that we are not Superman might be good for us. So the candle will go out, we must come to terms and know our mortality/humanity.

But we must also not forget,
Memento vivere - Remember to live!

Ars Longa Vita Brevis – “Art is long, life is short.”

Painter / Artist I describe my work as realism, because I am interested in depicting the subjects I choose to paint, as I see them in nature. I am fascinated by the way things look, painting for me is about seeing, to spend time with something so that I can really begin to see it and explain the subject with as much clarity as I can. It forces me to study and understand a thing or an idea and observing those things that might otherwise might be overlooked. I hope to seduce the viewer into the painting and if they meditate on it for a while, they may discover deeper, more specific layers of meaning.
