"I am a silhouette and the veil of the past keeps me still in the dark." This image is sourced from an old colonial photograph which I have used to make reference to the historical precedents that inform and empower our society today. Removed from its contrived surrounds, it has been placed in black dust symbolic of the magical intermediary between woman and the unseen forces of nature that govern her fate. The veil does not conceal the face but acts as a membrane enclosing the true nature and power of the feminine force yearning to be free. Through experimentation I hope to create new and disruptive art that inspires dialogue with a wide variety of audiences. I think it’s important to say that I make art with the hopes of giving myself and others a voice that speak of our experiences from our collective past that leave traces or threads that connect us to the present. Many of my paintings to date are inspired by a Gothic sensibility and are drawn from 17th to 19th century discourse and motifs found in art, poetry, texts, fashion and films. I like to make high quality objects with a nod to the masters that are luscious, seductive and precious but on closer inspection reveal cultural upheavals that I believe inspires creative thinking and perhaps a shift in perspectives.
