Venice is a city of contrasts. On the main paths and canals it is busy, noisy, choked with tourists. Walk a couple of blocks and you find a calmer, quieter city where the buildings bordering the smaller canals soak up the sun and heat and create a stillness that is only broken when a gondola or small boat sets up ripples on the water. That is the Venice shown in this painting, with the Grand Canal just out of sight at the far end. The reflections of buildings are full of colour and the air is almost tangible.
