Abstract still life oil painting on canvas.

This original still life oil painting was created in the morning light and captures an arrangement of earthenware objects including a pitcher, bowl and terracotta pot with an artful flowering plant. I was drawn to the shapes of the items including the delicacy of the flowering branches and their strong yet spindly nature. Seeing the group as an orchestration of contrasts I chose to develop the abstract quality I saw within the composition.

Simple forms and a sophisticated palette of colors were used to articulate the character of the still life. The beautiful cool blue, green and violet hues were tempered in their intensity and offset by wonderful creamy light accents on the table. I loved the geometric and angular shapes that spoke of a simplicity kindred to my heart.

This original painting was created at a fellow artists house where a small group of us gather from time to time to paint together. We were set up in her sunroom right off the kitchen and enjoyed the experience of companionship in creating.

This piece was painted on a gallery wrapped canvas which is signed and ready for framing. The painting has visible brushwork and texture which add to it's character and originality.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
