Hide-and-seek comes up in one way or another in many of my works. Often the face of a figure is covered, or in the case of the painting The Boarded-up Window, the occupant of the house has exposed himself and hidden behind boarded-up windows. In Lookout, we are cast in the role of the peeper, but this is the moment before the peep-out. The uncertainty of whether or not to pull back the curtain and look out. Visually, the title and the theme of the painting are a contradiction in terms, as through the drawn curtain we see only a blurred image, figuratively representing hopelessness, hope and hopelessness.
