About The Artwork

The French Collection resonates deeply with me, embodying my profound connection to a country that has captivated my heart since childhood. Immersed in French culture, I grew up savouring the humour of Louis de Funès films and being inspired by Julia Child and Jacques Pépin’s culinary artistry, their flair in bringing French cuisine into our home through the television screen. This collection is a heartfelt homage to my inaugural journey to France in 2022, a place that felt intimately familiar yet thrillingly new. This pilgrimage was more than a mere exploration of Paris, Normandy’s and the South of France’s stunning vistas; it was a voyage into the depths of my paternal lineage, connecting me to a part of my heritage that had always seemed just out of reach. Born and nurtured in the diverse energies of New York and Haiti, my artistic expression is a dynamic fusion, mirroring the rich tapestry of cultures that have shaped me. Each artwork in this collection is a tender narrative of my past, a symphony of colours, and a courageous embrace of the diverse influences that form the essence of my identity.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Clifford Bertin is a Haitian-American, self-taught abstract painter based between Port-au-Prince (Haiti), Paris (France) and Mexico City (Mexico). Passionate about culinary art and painting since childhood, he draws from these two mediums to express himself. His paintings are inspired by ancestral culture, spiritual vibrations and are passionately translated onto his canvases using colours to convey his interpretation of Haitian culture in its many forms. The hidden messages that can be found in his paintings spontaneously transport us to a spiritual and vibrant world that is both subtle and enigmatic, and lead to multiple interpretations of his work. His paintings are done in series and phases that are carefully thought of and tell stories around themes of joy, spirituality and societal preoccupations. Clifford has participated in both individual and group exhibitions in public spaces in the United States, Canada and Haiti and has work in private collections all over the world.
