About The Artwork
After years of working with a very bright palette, I suddenly discovered the thrill of working without colour, when I was working on a heritage project with the Government. The heritage project is dedicated to the river Brahmaputra and the historic heritage connected with it. The designer wanted to retain the old world look and hence all art work had to be in black and white or sepia. This is when I discovered the joy of expressing without colours. Although it is extremely complex to present a complete picture in only two colours, I have realised the lack of distraction that colours pose, make the subject more intense and emotive. The painting is a tribute to real life creators, the ones who create a handwoven cloth: every piece unique, with its own journey and story. A journey that cannot be replicated with the clone like production of machines.

I feel that the world around is a cacophony of images, the good and the bad, the sweet and the ugly, all intermingled to create our visual plane. Art to me is a means to segregate this madness into clearer simpler visuals. I try to bring out the best in an image by focusing on those extraordinary elements that tend to get lost in the crowd. In simpler words, art to me is a means to highlight the best in the world. My work has often been described as an explosion of colors. The use of contrasting colors, juxtaposing the reds and blues, brings out conflicting elements of the subject with breathtaking ease. My watercolor, in contrast, have an extremely subtle and calming effect and its mainstay is the depth of emotions that the painting is able to convey. After a long love affair with bright colours, I have recently stumbled upon the thrill of working sans colours and hence my recent series of black and white oil paintings. I feel the two colours, black and white, perhaps convey more emotions than thousand different hues put together.
