About The Artwork

“Waco Suspension Bridge with ALICO” Original Acrylic on Canvas, painted with Palette Knives 20H x 24W Framed $1,800 Description: One of my favorite places in Waco, Texas, is the Brazos River Walk. Standing on the north bank of the river offers one of the most iconic and treasured views of the Waco skyline. From my perch above the River Walk that evening, a gorgeous low sunset contrasted with the shadow side of the famed Waco Suspension Bridge, also known as the Chisholm Trail Bridge. In the background is the iconic 25 story ALICO Building, which survived the 1953 Category 5 Tornado Outbreak that destroyed almost everything around it including much of downtown Waco. The 12th painting in my “Waco Landmarks Series,” I have painted this bridge many times. It’s a joy to paint and the entire scene is a sight to behold as the sun sets, the lights come on, and the reflections of it all dance across the water of the Brazos. Occasional kayakers, ducks, and Captain Ryan on his Waco River Safari Tour boat float by. What a peaceful escape! In 2018, Waco was the #2 tourist destination in the US. Since arriving here in late 2016, as an artist I see many reasons to keep “painting the town red (….well, maybe not just red)!”Come see us! Meanwhile, enjoy the view!

For Waco, Texas-based professional artist and instructor Lee James, it’s all about color and texture. Lee’s style is best described as blending aspects of impressionism and realism with a strong emphasis on bold, vivid, even playful use of color in light-filled paintings. His favored medium is acrylic as it can be used like oils or watercolor. Thrilled to embark on each new painting, his ultimate reward is your enjoyment of the “worlds” he creates in each painting. Lee has a lifelong interest in architecture, having owned two National Historic Register Plantations and even designed homes. Structures of some type will almost always be found in his landscapes. A love of coastal, boats, cars and trucks, and animals have also had a profound influence in his work as well as a strong interest in nocturnal scenes. Lee is not a “high noon” painter. Early morning, later in the afternoon, and evening…”these are the times when colors are more intense, subjects are more interesting” and will always be part of his works. With an intense love of color, Lee rarely mixes color on the palette, choosing instead to pickup multiple colors, with a palette knife, and “let it happen” as the paint goes on the canvas. “The result is far more exciting!”
