About The Artwork

'Wake Up' is a painting of a vivid dream I had: I was in a beautiful sunny meadow when I suddenly saw the most magnificent golden horse. As it was running as a truly free horse, I was awestruck by its' beauty and strength. But suddenly the horse started galloping towards me and I felt it was just going to run all over me, so I turned and tried to run away as fast as I could! You should know I'm actually already a little scared of horses in real life ;-). So while I was running my lungs out I suddenly stumbled on a river, and while I was figuring our what to do, the horse took a final sprint right at me and....stopped! I had never seen such a powerful magnificent horse so close and so intense - and then I woke up. Now what did that mean...there is so much symbolism in dreaming about a horse, but I could never find a tale that explained what I felt. So the explanation closest to my heart is, the horse was urging me to wake up - not from the dream, but from my fears, and own my strength and light. Something I read in a poem really describes the feeling I have with this painting: ‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us’. - from Our Deepest Fear by Marianne Williamson

As a child I lived in tropical Borneo, instilling in me a great love for nature, animals, forests, sunsets and the sea. We moved back to the Netherlands when I was almost ten, and as an adult lived in China, Singapore and Paris. At the moment I live next to the forests in the Netherlands. I am inspired by my dreams, trying to capture the symbols and messages I dream about onto canvas and creating new worlds.
