About The Artwork

‘Schooling [in Bosnia Herzegovina] is characterised by mono-ethnic classrooms, segregated schools, opposing pedagogies, and an absence of a common curriculum’ (Kelly Hill). Inspired by research on young people in former Yugoslavia, this series of artwork aims to tell children's stories as they navigate the segregated education system and attempt to make sense of the legacy of conflict and tensions that surround them. Drawing on influences from traditional Balkan designs, the artwork presents a juxtaposition between contemporary themes and ancient, folk-like symbols. In this piece, two different sets of textbooks create a barrier down the centre of the picture. Different traditional symbols such as arrows emphasise the sense of separation between the figures on each side. I imagine the figures clambering over the 'wall' to glimpse what lies on the other side...and discovering other children who play and dream just like them. This visually stunning and thought-provoking piece of art celebrates the rich folk heritage of the Balkans whilst encouraging us to dream and build a better and more peaceful future.

I am originally from Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland, and have a diverse creative background spanning professional work as a musician, designer, artist and educator. As an artist, my work is broadly focused on people and place. Inspiration comes from travels in the Middle East and North Africa, plus my longstanding interest in conflict and peacebuilding. My mixed media approach uses collage, acrylics, ink and chalk pastels and fuses realistic and abstract elements to suggest the history and stories that lie beneath the surface of a place.
