Watching and Waiting Painting

Watching and Waiting was taken from a study of an original photograph. The painting shows two figures looking at an artwork enclosed within a thin frame. The artwork depicted is left blank but allows the viewers project their own reality or even fantasy on to its surface. Upon close observation, the painting is tilted slightly. This hints at imperfections and warping within vision. Forming part of the intention to reject the original, almost-perfect photography. The relationship of the figures remains unknown. Are they friends, lovers or strangers? They could be all these notions at once, or at different points in time. Emotional closeness is hinted through the figures sitting with their bodies touching in close proximity. Both of their faces are concealed as we observe the heads from behind, again opening up possibilities of the imagination. Aside from the muted colour palette, the red outfit of the figure to the right stands-out starkly. The paint is applied thickly, hinting at emotional depth beyond the physical bodies. There are multiple gazes happening simultaneously. The real-life viewer looks at the at the subjects of the painting who do not return the gaze but instead look toward at the painting within their own world. The figures mirror the act of passive observation. Within this sequence, looking becomes continuous, going even beyond the picture itself. Faces are never revealed in this process, with looking excluding the visual presence of eyes, only metaphorical.
