About The Artwork

This watercolor portrait of a regal Native American Chief 'Blanket of the Sun' is remarkable in that it depicts his grand regalia dress including the war bonnet made of black and white eagle feathers, a long vest in finest beige suede, and the ermine straps and plumes descending from his war bonnet, as pure showcases of Native American fortunes. These are the hard-won treasures of life in the open air, and trophies caught with age-old cunning strategies against natural opponents. Each plume represents a victory over the wilderness. How does a tribesman conquer a fierce dragon, armed with intelligence and courage alone? His ceremonial dress displays the courage and wits of his achievements. Chief Blanket of the Sun belonged to the peaceful Nez Perce Tribe in Idaho that was first discovered by President Jefferson's 'Corps of Discovery', so well described in the book 'Undaunted Courage'.

After a fashion design career in New York City, I now paint realistic floral watercolors, and realistic portraits in watercolors, pastels, oil on canvas and digitally tinted portraits. What motivates me to paint Native Americans in this new watercolor collection is the beauty of the true personality and character of a magnificent race of ancient people issuing from pre-history and call doing them justice an awesome honor. In my watercolor flower paintings, I am inspired by the exact luscious realism of Dutch Baroque Flower painting traditions that consoled me throughout my lonely years in boarding school, from which I drew solace in experiencing botanic beauty, elegance, luscious generosity, color, and frivolity, in short, in all things that are out of the realm of a strict upbringing. They still provide glorious satisfaction, even if my standards for classical realism still drive me.
