About The Artwork

This watercolor paints a regal Native American Indian Chief Red Pipe wearing his war bonnet while wearily facing the future. Let my viewers be inspired by proud, cunning, fiercely courageous people who faced an inexorable change in their lives and fought to the death to maintain their liberties and traditions. I choose to visualize the black-and-white images made by late 19th-century photographers, such as this one made by Edward Sheriff Curtis, to make Native American history and the cultural background of the USA come alive. For its proud heritage, I pay tribute to these early days of America's existence, to honor those who survived and thrived in its unspoiled wilderness.

After a fashion design career in New York City, I now paint realistic floral watercolors, and realistic portraits in watercolors, pastels, oil on canvas and digitally tinted portraits. What motivates me to paint Native Americans in this new watercolor collection is the beauty of the true personality and character of a magnificent race of ancient people issuing from pre-history and call doing them justice an awesome honor. In my watercolor flower paintings, I am inspired by the exact luscious realism of Dutch Baroque Flower painting traditions that consoled me throughout my lonely years in boarding school, from which I drew solace in experiencing botanic beauty, elegance, luscious generosity, color, and frivolity, in short, in all things that are out of the realm of a strict upbringing. They still provide glorious satisfaction, even if my standards for classical realism still drive me.
