About The Artwork

This watercolor of a young warrior of the Crow tribe was painted based on a photograph made in 1883 by Frank Jay Haynes. Source: The Montana Historical Society. His youthful face looks tormented by the realization that the future he was born into no longer exists. His red shirt, white and black eagle plumes, his hair enveloped in black fur, the adornments of white ermine fur strips dangling from his necklace, and the silver medal he carries all make for a well-deserved entrance into a new world he must discover. Did he succeed? The process of how their integration or lack of it came about is now in re-evaluation mode. I would have loved to know more and follow up on these stories of a proud pre-civilization race being forced to reinvent their future, their entitlements, and their beliefs.

After a fashion design career in New York City, I now paint realistic floral watercolors, and realistic portraits in watercolors, pastels, oil on canvas and digitally tinted portraits. What motivates me to paint Native Americans in this new watercolor collection is the beauty of the true personality and character of a magnificent race of ancient people issuing from pre-history and call doing them justice an awesome honor. In my watercolor flower paintings, I am inspired by the exact luscious realism of Dutch Baroque Flower painting traditions that consoled me throughout my lonely years in boarding school, from which I drew solace in experiencing botanic beauty, elegance, luscious generosity, color, and frivolity, in short, in all things that are out of the realm of a strict upbringing. They still provide glorious satisfaction, even if my standards for classical realism still drive me.
