About The Artwork

This oil painting is a vertical/long-style composition, the view is of the early spring, when the snow has melted and the land is sodden. In the foreground, soft light is reflecting from the log which sits in the blue waters; and in the middle distance we can see the bright oranges and reds of the dogwood. Looking into the far distance, the road runs horizontally, its path mapped by the vertical poles carrying the lines of communication. Along the horizon we see the trees, in many shades of greens, echoing the geometric shapes. The iconic Tree bares its beautiful shape, and we follow its growth, as it quivers into the blues and grey of the sky. The painting is framed with a simple wood, painted black float frame, that is, a small gap between the canvas and frame which acts as as a visually pleasing framing device. Its overall dimensions are w 17 height depth 1.5 inches.

Welcome to my world! It's the real world, viewed in a somewhat surreal way. I want to make paintings which connect with the beauty of a place, that basic need to mirror and then interpret what we see and feel when looking. I am interested in the architecture that surrounds me, the created landscapes, and, the given landscapes of nature. The beautiful skies, the reflections on water, and the constant of the changing seasons. Each with its own identity. My pictures often have a focus on spatial relationships which are expressed through geometric forms. The Subject matter for me has to be rooted in naturalism and narrative; the composition can overlay the design aesthetics of the abstract, but, the image has to be recognizable in the 'real' world. My paintings often imply a narrative of journeys, and there is the suggestion of the fleeting nature of our one life when it is contrasted with our sense of timelessness which is felt through nature, and history, and which we perhaps desire through our complex beliefs based upon faiths. I was classically trained in painting, with oils, there is currently still no match to the luminosity and vibrancy that this medium provides. When the light shines onto the painting all those individual layers of paint, each holding their colour come to create luminous depths. That's not to say I don't like painting in acrylics, I do that too. I try to pitch my paintings at different price points, and so my canvas size varies from small to large, and from minimal to complex workings. Enjoy!
