About The Artwork

This painting was done from a series of plein air studies and photos I took of my family’s orchards in Northern Michigan while visiting home. I carted my easel all over the orchard for days getting as many studies as I could on my vacation thinking about how I’d approach this painting once home. This is actually the second painting I've done from the material I gathered. These apples are just too much fun. I didn't spend nearly enough time in the pear orchard. They weren't quite ripe yet and the day I was there the weather wasn't as nice. I'll have to make another trip home soon just to capture some pears. The light was going in and out of the clouds on the day I was painting this one and I pulled a bench over to this broken limb. I exaggerated this splash of light hitting the one side. We were getting sun showers, the way we do in Michigan. It was such a moody, melancholy day but this one beam of light shone down right onto my bench and I had just enough time to capture it with a photo before a cloud swallowed it up again. I grabbed the rest of the scene with a quick plein air sketch to try to remember the colors I was seeing and used the two together to get the feeling again when I got back into the studio.

The first thing people tend to remember about me as a child is that I was always drawing. Even in elementary school I always had my sketchbook. My first love was always traditional painting. I had a book about the Old Masters I copied from when I wasn't copying Star Wars characters from magazines. I received a BFA in figure drawing and graphic design with a minor in art history from Eastern Michigan University in 1987. I worked for 15 years as an art director and graphic designer. I painted and drew in my free time. In 2000, I began freelancing to find more time to paint, and by 2004, I quit advertising to paint full-time. In addition to my studio practice, I teach painting in my Sarasota FL studio.
