About The Artwork

_ Who Are They - Who Are You? 2014 70 x 50 cm oil on acrylic sheet, fabric, paper _ This painting is part of the artist's "Childhood" series. In the centre of the work, an image of Mao cut from an art magazine is glued to the acrylic sheet. In its foreground, two teenagers wearing jumpers are turning their backs such that the spectator is unable to see their faces. The artist is thus playing with the notion of the gaze: Is Mao looking at us or at the teenagers? Is the teenager wearing the white jumper looking at his partner or rather at Mao? And as the title suggests, the spectator might also wonder: who are they? Through this interplay of gazes the artist can be construed as questioning identity. Often, the clothes people wear identify them as belonging to a particular class, age or other demographic group. While Mao's clothes belong to another time, his image as painted by Andy Warhol is arguably as iconic as those paintings that adorn the teenager’s jumper. The coloured jumper is a collage of masterpieces, such as Hokusai's "Le Fuji rouge" (1830-1832), Pontorno's "Madonna with Child & St John" (1527-1528), and van Gogh's "Self-Portrait" (1889). The teenagers' identity is not only expressed in the way they wear their clothes but also in the environment they see around them. By Annka Kultys

Born in 1974 in Lublin, Poland, lives and works in Switzerland She studies business in Switzerland at Lycée Jean-Piaget while simultaneously attending the Academy of Meuron. She earned a diploma with honors from the van der Kelen Institute in Belgium and then pursued ceramics training in Lisbon and Miami. Her past as a political refugee at the age of 12 and her nomadic life starting at 20 opened her to various existing styles—pop, conceptual, craft, appropriation. Her art, shaped by her personal experiences, finds expression through different mediums such as oil painting, illustrations, and ceramics, which she sometimes blends to create her unique mode of expression. Dusong creates asymmetrical or iconic faces, raising contemporary questions about women’s identity and/or obsessive consumerism. Animals and poetry also hold significant places in her works. She uses vivid colors for provocation, embracing an aesthetic devoted to consumer culture, and soft tones to evoke childhood reveries filled with lightness and poetry—an art that heals.
