This painting is inspired by the detective fiction of the "Golden Age" (nineteen twenties and thirties). It is a fantastical denouement scene where the viewer becomes the detective and must follow all the clues in the picture in order to uncover the "guilty party"! The clues and sequence must be uncovered using such means as Morse code, semaphore, international shipping flags, and straightforward observational skills. This painting is an intellectual puzzle which would make a wonderful talking point at any gathering. There is a reason to look at this painting and, like the fiction upon which it is based, it requires study and reflection in order to uncover its secrets.
