About The Artwork

The author is inspired by an expressionist understanding of the image, with strong black contours and unadorned motifs, however, in his work there is also a surrealist trace of otherworldly apparitions lurking somewhere in the background of our mind and ego burdened by control. Stefan Stevanović's paintings present dark, grotesque creatures to a man who is trained by social norms that tend to restrain him and rein in the unpredictable animal in him. The bizarre creatures in Stevanović's paintings do not address what the viewer wants to show, but what they hide. In front of others, a person strives for a harmonious, calm, conventionally beautiful and attractive appearance and expects the same from others. However, what society, culture and conventions reject as undesirable settles beneath that beautified surface, so behind the scenes can easily lurk the ghosts shown in these pictures, equally eager for control and power. The gaping figures in Stevanovic's works are placed in an undefined space that seems to represent the dark corridors of the human subconscious. Sometimes accented with black, blue, or blood red, this space is just as dark when accented with gold or yellow. Caricature characters wear expressions of pain, fear, malice, anger, sometimes grinning. They rarely look directly at the viewer - as if they tend to remain hidden, in the dark, behind the stage of the performance that the ego thinks it is leading and directing. Occasionally we get the impression that these creatures are banished, we can see a hand pointing a finger at them or pressing them from somewhere on high. In everyday life, accustomed to beautified, toned, well-groomed and perfect bodies, in these pictures we observe bodies that are tortured, unaesthetic, animalistic, subterranean. The works of Stefan Stevanović expose the dark, secret chambers of the human psyche and introduce us to the world from which modern man tries to escape.
