About The Artwork

When visiting my husband's family in country NSW during summer, I love to go to the Wingham Summer Rodeo. It is such a fascinating space for an artist. There is something very unselfconscious and inward oriented about the way the participants carry themselves, and yet there is also something very theatrical about it all with the particular form of dress, the gait and postures of the riders, and of course, the dynamism and drama on the ring. I loved getting the gestural poses of the protagonists right in this work. There is a story here somewhere, asking to be told! The tonalities of light and shade of the buttercream coloured cladding of the historic building was a nice challenge, especially against the bright colours of the figures lit by the Australian sun. I am planning some further figurative works in this series in 2023. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Arts and Crafts Show in Sydney, in April 2023.

Hello! Thank you for your interest in my art. I have been painting for as long as I remember. Though not formally trained, I engaged in artmaking throughout school and also completed a number of shorter courses while finishing “more serious” study at university. I have been working in academic, human services and research roles but always sketching on holidays. I have reengaged with my creative side in full when asked by a friend to complete a bespoke commission in 2020. I have not stopped since. Covid lockdowns had (amongst other less desirable effects) the unexpected benefit of giving us the time and space to reconnect with the things that nourish and sustain us. I have used this to full advantage and had my first solo show “Far Horizons, Jewel Seas” at Gallery Lane Cove on 19-30 January 2021. Since then I have taken part in a number of Drummoyne Art Society shows, of which I am a proud member. I have also won first prize at the Combined Art Societies of Sydney show in 2023 (watercolour) and got a Highly Commended for a watercolour at the Sydney Royal Art and Craft Show in 2023. What inspires me? Water and landscape have been a constant source of creative energy. Having moved to Sydney from Ukraine with my family as an adolescent, I have been drawn to the light, energy, colours and textures of the Australian landscape. Some of my art is an attempt to capture the sensation of immersion in nature, whether it be the power of the wave or the serenity of the Australian outback landscape. Recently I have been more focused on the challenges of depicting heritage architecture. I paint in acrylic and watercolour. I currently exhibit some of my smaller locally inspired work in the Hummingbird Sweet Things store in Wareemba, Sydney. I welcome commissions.
