About The Artwork

Wings was inspired by a drawing that I had created in 2020. During this time, I had become nearly obsessed with capturing the essence of a bird's flight in color and form. Now in 2021 I felt compelled to do the same with this piece "Wings" in paint. In terms of process, the molding paste that dries on the canvas was where I began for texture. For the initial stages of my work I never work too tightly, and I just let the painting become what it wants to be. Next came the oils, and I felt drawn to the bright red paint first. The light blue, yellow and pink emerged very naturally during the process. This piece at its core is about perspective. Wings are a symbol of perspective, as they enable the bird to gain different vantage points of the world.

After earning a Bachelor of Individualized Studies in Art, Holistic Health, and Religious Studies at the University of Minnesota, Cohen studied traditional oil painting. and mixed media techniques at the Milan Art Institute. It was there that her style as an abstract expressionist emerged. Today Cohen’s work explores emotional nuance through the use of vibrant colors and textures. Her work is visceral, fast-paced, and intuitive, leveraging tools such as spray paint, collage, mirror, fabric, acrylic inks, and oil paint. She considers her creative process a storm of inspiration that might strike at any moment - moving quickly before passing upon completion of each piece. “My work is intuitive,” says Cohen “Painting for me is both a release of the old and a process of regeneration where I feel very connected and alive.” Based in the heart of Minneapolis, Cohen’s studio is five minutes from the Mississippi river, where she often sits and writes about themes for her upcoming pieces. The sun moving through the water - an element Cohen has incorporated in much of her work - is one of her top inspirations. Cohen is in the beginning stages of creating an art book of her work.
