About The Artwork

Wood Duck and Wee Leopard Frog, 16” x 12”, oil on canvas, 2022, framed in cherry wood with gold interior surround, dark finish, 47.5 cm x 37.5 cm overall dimension. This piece is a part of The Water Fowl Series of oil paintings begun in 2022. It shows a single Wood Duck, male, plump and proudly displaying its plumes from a swampy rock. A small frog hides in the grasses right under the fowl bill, perhaps fearful, perhaps annoyed, but watching from seclusion in either case.

ARTIST STATEMENT I paint in oils, have since I was twelve, nearly fifty years ago. My output has ebbed and flowed over the decades, as have my interests changed to and from landscapes and abstractions, portraiture and flowers. Animals have grabbed my attention since the beginning of the pandemic, birds in particular, because their beauty in both color and shape exist in innocence; they know not how lovely they are. After completing a series on extinct birds, I began to study those exotic species of The Birdhouse at The Lincoln Park Zoo, of which this Motmot is one of my favorites. Douglas Black.
