About The Artwork

"X makes the spot" is an abstract painting that merges influences from the brutalist movement and the organic texture of ancient cave art. Against a textured off-white background, a network of striking black lines intertwines, while a few enigmatic black circles punctuate the composition, creating an intriguing visual dialogue between structure and primal forms. The bold black lines, reminiscent of the raw architectural elements associated with brutalism, command attention as they traverse the canvas with purposeful energy. They evoke a sense of strength and solidity, embodying the rigid and robust qualities found in brutalist designs. These lines intersect and interweave, forming an intricate network that hints at hidden narratives and connections within the artwork. Amongst the dominant lines, scattered black circles emerge, like ancient symbols or celestial bodies suspended in space. These circles, inspired by the primitive allure of cave art, exude a sense of mystique and intrigue. They serve as focal points within the composition, inviting contemplation and evoking a primal connection to the origins of human expression. The textured off-white background evokes the rough, earthy surfaces found in caves, establishing a tactile and immersive experience for the viewer. This background texture adds depth and richness to the painting, creating a visual tension between the ordered lines and the organic nature of the background. The interplay between the primitive texture and the rigid lines fosters a sense of harmony between past and present, tradition and innovation. "X marks the spot" transcends the boundaries of time and style, uniting the aesthetics of brutalism and cave art. It explores the duality of human creativity and its ability to adapt and reinterpret ancient forms. The painting invites viewers to reflect on the enduring power of art, connecting them to the ancient past while inspiring contemplation on the present and the future.

"I hail from Hull, England, where I carved out a career as an artisan woodworker until 2008, when I embarked on a journey to Australia. It was there that I unearthed my deep-seated passion for painting, channeling my surroundings into evocative art pieces. Though always drawn to the arts, it was in my new homeland where I discovered my true vocation as a painter. Over the years, I meticulously refined my skills, delving into art competitions with gratifying results. This propelled me into a full-time painting career, marked by extensive exhibitions across Australia, particularly renowned for my captivating portraiture and breathtaking landscapes. My artworks adorn both public and private collections, including esteemed venues like the Gold Coast Art Gallery, Cliftons in Brisbane, and The PLC Sydney. In 2017, I established roots with my family in the idyllic coastal town of Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, cultivating my creativity within my own studio/gallery. My paintings pulsate with the energy, dynamism, and spectacle of my environment, each brushstroke a testament to my renewed passion for capturing life's essence. Through my art, whether portraying people, landscapes, or abstract concepts, I strive to infuse vitality that resonates with viewers. Among my accolades, I've clinched prestigious awards such as securing first place in the revered Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize in Sydney, clinching the Cliftons Art Prize in Brisbane, and earning spots in esteemed exhibitions like the Archibald Prize and Moran Portrait Prize, among others."
