About The Artwork

Every square inch in Kyoto symbolizes mindfulness, peace, and silence present purely in nature, opening doors to stillness. When I first toured Kyoto, I instantly loved its beauty, peace, and serenity, the features I crave to create art. Undoubtedly, Silent Zen Gardens of Kyoto is a go-to place to find inspiration and mindfulness or the true spirit of Mushin, mind-without-mind. Home to seventeen world heritage sites, Kyoto Zen and its spiritual architecture, darkened atmosphere, and serenity transcends one into a zone of intimacy and silent contemplation, which fosters inner peace. Simple yet elegant materials like soil, paper, and wood create a realistic sense of closeness, while circular windows promote spirituality and elevate aesthetics. Its circular shape shares a story as a circle, in Buddhism, represents the universe’s totality and perfection. Safe to say, the view on display in Kyoto Zen is indeed a manifestation of a perfect world. The large, open windows in the place mirror a picture frame-like view teleporting us into a world via sliding doors that reflect the seasonal beauty and the spirit of change, varying from cherry blossoms to autumn leaves. In addition, the wooden verandas encircling the building also provide a sense of oneness with nature and its creator. As one, its architecture fosters awareness about change and seasonal beauty. Personally, the experience sparked happy childhood memories, being a 16-year-old kid, dreaming about becoming an artist and making my first landscape at my father’s farmhouse. Back then, I didn’t know much about Zen gardens, yet the desire to illustrate peace and natural beauty brought me ever so close to the spirit of Zen. Today, it is hard to believe how I created this back then, using trees, shapes, rocks, and spaces to lay the land and depict peace.
