About The Artwork

A road, path, or river, winding, or wending its way toward a horizon has been a device I've used in my art since I was a child. It captures a sense of time and space, possibilities, and discovery. It also creates the illusion of depth in a painting, and is an engaging compositional form that causes the viewer's eye to follow its zigzagging path. I've returned to this device many times in my art, over a span of years. This river is similar to the composition I created in 2nd grade as an elementary school project that I still have in my collection. The technique I use to create many of my oil pastel paintings includes laying down colors in short, diagonal strokes with the oil pastel sticks. It allows me to cover large areas of the surface quickly, and to make changes in density or thickness as I go. I often use several brands of oil pastels in my work, and use the harder types on the lower layers, finishing up with the softer (and more expensive) brands for the last layers - due to their larger color selection, quality, and opacity. This allows me to build a work in layers, making alterations up to the final layer and last moment. When I create a landscape painting, I first aspire to mesmerize myself with the patterns, colors, and forms I incorporate into my work, and hope to similarly engage those that view my finished paintings, drawings, and sculptures.
