VIEW IN MY ROOM

I do not read German and therefore many of the documents relating to the family's existence in Vienna are incomprehensible to me. This gave rise to the blue 'graffiti' marks which echo writing but are not actual words/ letters. The title refers to the lists of items which were relinquished in order that family members were allowed to leave the country. (One of the lists itemised 12 Coffee spoons.) The work explores the past and present. Firstly, the contemporary photographic image of a location in Vienna holds specific importance in terms of placing the work in time. The photograph was taken in Glasergasse (The address where my father lived in the 9th District - Alsergrund). I have an image of my father outside his grandparents' grocery shop prior to WWII. There is a sign on the shop advertising Anker Brot (Anchor Bread). Despite not knowing the location of this shop it was strange to find an Anker bakery shop in the same street and some of the architectural details on the building matched. Two of the four photos are in negative which, for me, gives feeling of uneasiness - possibly day and night. Secondly, the spoons represent the items from the past in the form of contemporary photos and painted motifs. Lastly, the 'writing' is an attempt to create the illusion of text and the form takes visual cues from hebrew, written text but also contemporary graffiti tagging.
