Bertha Diaz Artist statement My work as an artist started with my writing, love for film, and music. I started writing at the age of 10. I wrote mainly short stories and poems. All my major influences came from around the beat nick generation; Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Boroughs. Words to me capture different types of feelings. When I paint I want to capture those feelings. I love films from the 30's all the way to the present. I think film to capture time, landscape, and many times a sense of mood that I want to capture in my paintings. Music I play when I paint, this relaxes my hand, which in turn leaves for a looser brush strokes. As well certain songs will bring me back to memoires from the past and from there I can create image to use. I also like the layout of certain albums, their use of space which I have used in many of my drawings and paintings. The work I do is paintings; I use acrylic paint in a surrealistic and abstract style. I use different types of canvas like wood, glass, and layer my paintings with found materials like pieces of glass and jewelry. The process of my work is by first choosing the subject. I do that by reading, watching movies, playing music and writing. This will build a story in my head. I start to create the overall theme and layout of the painting. Then I start to sketch out the overall design. Lastly I choose the materials; paint brushes, color of paint, canvases, any other materials I want to add to the painting. My philosophy as an artist is I paint what I see, what I feel, and create on paper. I use a lot of my writing to get an idea what I want to create visually. I find that once my mind has form the words to what I want to express that drawing and painting process becomes more natural.
