Painting background: alternating metallic acrylic paint. Image: oil, acrylic and chinese ink on 4 wood panels, 3 of which are framed. Large format painting. Tetraptych. With this series of paintings called 'our babylonic brain' , I have juxtaposed different images and tried to expose opposing time scales that are, however, synchronous. The centre piece depicts a moraine a glacier left millions of years ago on the southern tip of africa. The 3 male portraits show a fleeting moment in time when a gust of wind lifted their hair. Both are activities of energy occurring, however, within completely different time scales, one fleeting, the other more or less permanent, yet both within the same universe. The idea for work came to me when I read the last verse of a poem by Lavinia Greenlaw: There is a way into the mountain. It opens and closes and comes to rest beneath the bed of a river. Yourself as slow and sudden as rock. Above - listen! - the hidden continuous.
