• As a singer, dancer, actor, vaudevillian, and comedian, Sammy Davis, Jr. was one of the best entertainers in the ‘60s and ‘70s; and his treasury of hits included “And this is My Beloved” from the 1955 movie Kismet. • As the only black in the white-dominated Rat Pack, Sammy Davis struggled to find acceptance among the white, and later found comfort when Frank Sinatra embraced him like his own younger brother. • By supporting ex-President Richard Nixon in the ‘70s, Sammy Davis became the first black to be invited to sleep in the White House. • And when he married the 27-year old Swedish May Britt in 1960, and secretly maintained a sexual relationship with Hollywood actress Kim Novak for years, Sammy Davis got a backlash from both the black and white. • His addictions to alcohol, cocaine, and nicotine made him develop a cancerous sore throat that killed him in 1990 at 64; and his $5 million estate was not enough to pay the debt he owed his uncle, Sam. • And when I chose to paint his face gray instead of black, I knew that deep in his heart, he did not want to be seen as a black • And to bring you in a state of confusion, I titled my artwork as a question.
