I use numbers to construct my paintings because their mathematical sequence system of 0-9 places much needed limitation on my mind. Numbers also contain all possible forms in nature.

I use all sizes of numbers from the very large to the very small, depending on what is needed for a particular art work.

I use numbers for all kinds of emotions and subject matters. The subject of my work determines how I must break down my numbers and then rearrange them into new forms.

Finally when I use numbers from other cultures, the painting reflects the culture they come from. In this painting I have used Farsi/Arabic numbers. The painting speaks for itself. This work will be exhibited in LuminArte Gallery in Dallas Texas, September 26- October 31, 2015. Two paintings including this work was selected by Salma Tuqan, the curator for the Art of Contemporary Middles East, since 2011 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, for the 4th Annual Juried International Exhibition of Contemporary Islamic Art.

I have broken my numbers into new geometric shapes and thus have given them new looks.

This painting is acrylic on canvas and measures 12x16 inches.

Artist statement I use numbers to construct my paintings. Numbers are the world's best known and universally most recongnizable abstract images. Everyone in the world uses numbers at one time or another. Their unique mathematical sequence system of 0 - 9 limits the use of ten forms only. While numbers are constant, orderly, exact, reliable, objective and universal, some numbers can produce intense emotions. I break down and rearrange numbers into forms that are personal, subjective, chaotic, emotional, distorted and biased. That is my art. Shamira Nicolas
